I am Ânia

Who am I?

I’m a Creative Technologies student working where media, technology and new ideas meet. I love a good challenge, especially the kind with no obvious answer yet. My process usually starts with figuring out what the real problem is and who it’s for, then finding a creative angle that makes the solution worth paying attention to. I like that mix of thinking strategically about the why and getting my hands dirty with the how.

So why an Onion?

I didn’t choose to be an onion, it was chosen for me.

In high school, on a completely random day, one of my friends turned my name, Ânia, into “Ônia”. It started as a joke, but it stuck. Since it sounds so close, the onion followed naturally, and I became Ônia the onion. I wasn’t a fan at first. But the years went by and the nickname never left. My family knew it, my friends’ boyfriends used it, and eventually my own boyfriend did too. Somewhere along the way it stopped being a joke and became a part of who I am. Funnily enough, I don’t even like onions that much. But when I gave it proper thought, I realised I identify with it a lot. An onion is adaptable, has many layers, and is useful in almost everything. That’s how I like to work too: adapting to the problem in front of me, peeling back layers until I really understand it, and bringing something different to each project.
