3D sculpting
A 3D sculpted scene made in Blender, inspired by My Neighbor Totoro. It includes a sculpted main character, a modelled environment, textured materials and lighting, and a final retopologised version of the character. The goal was to recreate the atmosphere of the film and stay true to its most iconic character.
Development stages
I started with what makes the film feel the way it does and built the scene around that: the character first, then an environment that supports it, then materials and lighting to set the mood. I aimed for a realistic look in the textures and materials, so the character feels like a real creature in a real place without losing its charm.
The character: I sculpted Totoro and used alpha brushes to build the fur and the fine surface detail, so he feels soft and tactile and not like a smooth blob.
The environment: I modelled the surrounding scene, then used textures and materials to give it a realistic feel. Lighting ties everything together and creates the atmosphere.
Retopology: A high-detail sculpt is too heavy to use in most real situations, so I retopologised the character into clean, lighter geometry that keeps the shape and form of the original.
